Who doesn’t love turtles? At this point it seems like every amigurumi artist and maker has been creating adorable little turtles, but if you’re anything like us, the amount of sewing usually involved is a huge turn off. On that note, we’re thrilled to introduce our latest free crochet pattern!

Baby Turtle Friend Pattern

Materials

  • 5mm crochet hook 
  • Super bulky weight yarn (this pattern was created using Honey Bunny by Hobbii) 
  • Stitch markers 
  • 8mm plastic safety eyes x 2 
  • Stuffing of your choice (polyester stuffing was used for this pattern) 
  • Scissors 
  • Yarn needle 

Abbreviations

  • MR = Magic Ring 
  • SC = Single Crochet 
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet 
  • DC = Double Crochet 
  • Inc = Increase 
  • Dec = Decrease 
  • InvDec = Invisible decrease 
  • FLO = Front Loop Only 
  • BLO = Back Loop Only 

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern uses US crochet terminology. 
  • The number in brackets at the end of the round is how many stitches you should have completed. 
  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. 
  • Following this pattern using the recommended hook and yarn size will result in a finished item approx. 8cm wide x 8cm tall. 
  • Difficulty: Easy 

Instructions

Round 1: 5 SC in MR (5)
Round 2: Inc x 6 (10)
Round 3: [1 SC, inc] x 5 (15)
Round 4: 15 SC (15)
Round 5: 15 SC (15)
Round 6: [1 SC, dec] x 5 (10)
Insert safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4, around 3 stitches apart.
Fill the head with stuffing.
Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing

Shell + Body

Round 1: 6 SC in MR (6)
Round 2: Inc x 6 (12)
Round 3: [1 SC, inc] x 6 (18)
Round 4: [2 SC, inc] x 6 (24)
Round 5: 24 SC (24)
Tip: Before you begin round 6, place a stitch marker in the first stitch you did for round 6. This will help you find the stitch when you get to round 7.
Round 6: FLO 24 SC (24)
Switch colours on the final stitch of round 7 to the same colour you used for the head.
Round 7: 24 SC using the BLO of round 7.
Round 8: 4 SC, sl st and ch 5 in the FLO of next st, DC inc in second ch from hook, 3 HDC, sl st in the st where you started the chain. 4 SC, sl st and ch 4 in the FLO of the next st, DC inc in the second ch from the hook, 2 HDC, sl st in the st where you started the ch. 4 SC, sl st and ch 4 in the FLO of the next st, DC inc in the second ch from the hook, 2 HDC, sl st in the st where you started the ch. 4 SC, sl st and ch 5 in the FLO of next st, DC inc in second ch from hook, 3 HDC, sl st in the st where you started the chain. 4SC. Round 9: Dec x 12 (12)
Fill body with stuffing.
Round 10: Dec x 6 (6)
Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a decent tail for weaving in.

Assembly

Holding the head upright, ensuring the eyes are in line with the body, sew the head from roughly round 5 to round 8 at the front of the body. If desired, use pins to hold the head in place while sewing, to ensure a more even result.
Your baby turtle friend is now complete. Enjoy!
